I finished the NE corner of the puzzle before giving up. I’m not into Stanley Newman-style Stumpers, and this one fit the bill. Maybe I’ll come back to this site someday to see if the puzzles are more mainstream for ordinary solvers like me.

Fair enough, Seattle — sorry the style here wasn’t quite to your liking. I enjoy cluing my themeless puzzles pretty tough, but you might find the themers and Slide + Seek puzzles on this site more approachable. At any rate, thanks for the attempt!
